To avoid losing your car or bike when you lose a race, wait until the bars cover your car or bike. Do not select "Continue" or you will lose your car or bike. Leave it untouched until it goes to sleep. Turn it back on and it will still be in rides. This also works if you are chased by the police or you crash. Anything that goes behind bars can be avoided this way.
