In the first part of level 1-3, jump across the first pond and hit a pole. Hold as the pole propels you upwards back on the pole again. An extra life will be gained each time you are sent upwards. Repeat this process until you’ve collected 10 extra lives. Then, locate the next pond and repeat this trick to gain more lives. The maximum amount that you can collect is 255 before the counter resets to 0.
